While Mr. Thigpen has been licensed for a relatively short duration, he has been exposed to, and actively involved in, multiple areas of litigation. While attending South Texas College of Law, Mr. Thigpen was actively involved in commercial litigation, traditional insurance litigation, both first-party and third-party first, subrogation, bad faith insurance litigation, large scale coverage opinions, and securities litigation under the NASD.
During his second year of law school, Mr. Thigpen was assigned a coverage investigation regarding an alleged loss of two large tanks located at a refinery in Lake Charles, Louisiana. During his investigation, Mr. Thigpen utilized several contemporary and non- contemporary sources of evidence, including satellite imagery to determine if coverage was proper under the Commercial General Liability Policy. Intertwined in this matter were issues as they related to the sell and purchase of the refinery through a Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings and the underlying bad-faith issues. Upon completion of his investigation, Mr. Thigpen prepared the coverage opinion, and later presented his findings to the insured explaining why coverage was denied. Subsequently, Mr. Thigpen was actively involved in the filing of, and handling, of a Declaratory Judgment case regarding the refinery.
While focusing on civil defense litigation, Mr. Thigpen has also been involved in several cases wherein he represented the Plaintiff. As a third year law student, Mr. Thigpen was actively involved in the prosecution and jury trial of a wrongful death case which resulted in one of the largest jury verdicts to be awarded in history of the Harris County Probate Court.
The son of an orthopedic surgeon and medical researcher, Mr. Thigpen provides a unique knowledge and understanding of the stresses and pressures brought to bear on medical professionals when they are sued. As a result, Mr. Thigpen has established a successful career defending hospitals, nurses, and doctors.
While practicing in traditional arenas of litigation, Mr. Thigpen has been proactive in broadening the practice base of Doyen Sebesta. One of his new pursuits is legal issues related to the Texas Education system. Mr. Thigpen recognizes that in today’s environment, school districts and teachers face an unprecedented amount of liability. Mr. Thigpen provides his legal experience to several entities that ensure that teachers and school districts are better prepared for this new environment
In addition to his extensive and broad practice, Mr. Thigpen is actively involved in representing Home Owners’ Associations and Realty Management agencies. Since May of 2007, Mr. Thigpen has served as a Public Relations committee member CAI (Community Associations Initiative). In his capacity as a committee member, Mr. Thigpen is on the “front-lines” of assisting homeowner’s associations with the growing struggle to maintain the property value and aesthetic beauty of their communities.
